Seoul Trains ASEAN Nations to Combat North Korean Crypto Hackers in Cyber Defense Initiative

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry is spearheading a cyber defense initiative, training officials from seven ASEAN nations to counter North Korean crypto theft. This effort is part of a broader strategy to transfer cybersecurity expertise and strengthen the capabilities of Southeast Asian countries in addressing the growing threat of virtual asset theft linked to North Korean hackers.

The program, which began in early October, is being conducted in collaboration with the Korea Information Security Industry Association (KISIA) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The training aims to enhance cyber defense measures and create frameworks to prevent money laundering via cryptocurrency. The initiative comes as ASEAN’s rapidly expanding crypto markets face rising cyber threats, particularly from organizations like Lazarus, which have been accused of stealing digital assets globally.

The program will conclude on October 27, following earlier online pre-training sessions held between September 30 and October 8. Seoul aims to implement multifaceted countermeasures against emerging cyber threats from North Korea through this partnership with ASEAN.
